A group of Circus Stars gathered at Stornoway library on Thursday 13th October, where councillors Archie K Campbell and Annie Macdonald presented each child with a certificate and medal for having successfully completed the library’s Summer Reading Challenge 2011.  The children’s challenge was to read at least 6 books over the summer holidays, visiting the library regularly and receiving special rewards and stickers for every 2 books read.

The Summer Reading Challenge is run by public libraries all over the country and in 2010, 760,000 children signed up for the challenge. This was the first time the Summer Reading Challenge has been held in the Western Isles with over 100 children signing up for it. The theme this year was ‘Circus Stars’ and all children taking part received a fabulous circus stage when signing up for the challenge, to decorate with their stickers and keep track of all the books they read.
“Our first Summer Reading Challenge was a great success and really encouraged children to keep reading over the holidays. We look forward to even more children taking part in the 2012 challenge.” (Kathleen Milne, Team Leader: Western Isles Libraries).
