THE coastguard service as it stands must stay MCA reps were told at a meeting held in the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway last night.
A seventy strong audience peppered Coastguard bosses with questions over the proposed cuts but gained little concrete information about the plans, which would leave just one full time and one daytime hours sub-centre to cover the whole of the Scottish coastline.
The feeling that the review was pitting the Stornoway and Shetland stations against one another was condemned.
And the safety of those who use the sea for work and leisure was questioned if only two centres existed with campaigners concerned that local geographical knowledge vital to successful rescues would be lost.
However Scotland Coastguard chief Bill McFadyen said the plans were ‘not a done deal’ and that the consultation will carry on March 24th with all feedback considered for the final proposal to government.
